Aether Systems to Build New Network Operations Center in Southwest
Tempe, Ariz. Facility will Complement Current Owings Mills, Md. Facility and Provide Increased Scalability, Flexibility & Protection
OWINGS MILLS, Md. – August 3, 2000 – Aether Systems, Inc. (Nasdaq: AETH), the leading provider of wireless data products and services, announced today that the company has begun development of a new world-class network operations center in Tempe, Ariz. The new network operations center (NOC) will serve as both a back-up facility to Aether’s NOC in Owings Mills, Md. and as a hosting and support facility for applications for current and future Aether clients.
Scheduled to go on-line during the fourth quarter of this year, the Aether NOC provides the technology to link users of mobile computing devices to the information they need, wherever and whenever they need it. Aether’s current and future NOC provide a vital component of the company’s wireless data service offerings. By outsourcing to Aether, customers are relieved of the technology and operations burden of managing a highly complex wireless data system necessary to carry data over disparate networks to a wide range of end-user devices.
The new Tempe NOC will help Aether provide an unsurpassed level of service to its clients, including enhanced levels of security, disaster recovery, redundancy and monitoring. In addition, the Tempe NOC will increase Aether’s capacity to host a growing number of wireless data subscribers as the company’s rapid growth continues.
"Aether views the successful operation and development of a redundant NOC as a crucial next step in maintaining our competitive advantage," said Vice President of Operations Tom Lupica. "With the addition of the facility in Tempe, we will be able to provide clients with an unsurpassed level of confidence that the wireless data services we provide are secure and reliable."
Currently, the Aether NOC in Owings Mills hosts applications to support products including OmniSky, the new wireless ISP, Schwab PocketBroker, the wireless trading platform Aether co-developed with Charles Schwab and Reuters MarketClip, which provides real-time quotes, Reuters financial news and other information.
Aether chose Tempe as the site of its new NOC after an exhaustive search and consulting recommendations from IBM Recovery Services. The location offers many benefits such as a stable climate including a historic lack of natural disasters, reliable infrastructure for power and communication networks as well as access to an educated work force served by many quality regional universities.
