What type of wireless technology does TradeRunnerSM use?
TradeRunnerSM uses a wireless technology called Cellular Digital Packet Data (CDPD). CDPD is a standards-based wireless technology with superior coverage and speed. CDPD is a wide-area wireless network that takes advantage of the established cellular telephone network for wireless data transmissions. This is accomplished through the addition of specialized digital equipment at selected cellular voice towers. As such, not all cellular towers currently provide CDPD service.

Where is CDPD service available?
Similar to cellular telephones, there are limitations. The TradeRunnerSM service is not available in areas without CDPD. Currently, there is CDPD coverage in more than 75% of U.S. metropolitan areas. The most notable areas without CDPD coverage are Los Angeles, Atlanta, and New Orleans.

Can I use TradeRunnerSM on an airplane, train, or subway?
TradeRunnerSM access is not available on an airplane or subway. You can, however, use it on a train, provided the train's route has CDPD coverage.

What locations are optimal for usage?
The best locations are outdoors with a clear line of sight to a CDPD-enabled cellular tower. When operating indoors, the optimal location is near a window. As with cellular voice, CDPD transmissions are susceptible to a variety of factors that affect transmissions, including wireless modem-to-CDPD tower geometry, local terrain (natural and man-made), local electromagnetic environment, and weather.

No. You will be able to send and receive data once you are back in an area with good coverage.

How secure is the information being transferred?
Security is provided by CDPD's encryption. As a result, the airlink portion of your data transmission is virtually unscannable and indecipherable to anyone but the intended recipient. CDPD encodes data into digital transmission bursts (packets) securely and efficiently over the air using a forward error-correction scheme. This ensures that your data will arrive safely at the intended destination.
